World Humanitarian Day is commemorated every year on 19 August to pay tribute to humanitarian workers killed and injured in the course of their work, and to honor all aid and health workers who continue to provide life-saving support and protection to people most in need.
This day of recognition was established following a 2003 bombing in Baghdad that claimed the lives of 22 UN and relief agency personnel. Annually, we pay tribute to the courageous individuals who put themselves at risk to help others in dire circumstances.
Each year, WHD focuses on a theme, bringing together partners from across the humanitarian system to advocate for the survival, well-being and dignity of people affected by crises, and for the safety and security of aid workers. The theme for World Humanitarian Day 2024 is #Act For Humanity.
