National Physical Therapy Month

Every October, we celebrate National Physical Therapy Month (NPTM) to raise awareness about the numerous benefits of physical therapy and to honor the contributions of physical therapists (PTs), physical therapist assistants (PTAs), and students in transforming lives. This month-long event highlights the essential roles PTs and PTAs play across various specialties and patient populations.

This year, the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is focusing on the critical roles PTs and PTAs have in fall awareness, prevention, and recovery from fall-related injuries. National Physical Therapy Month is a prime opportunity to appreciate and recognize the dedication of these professionals in improving patient outcomes and promoting overall health and well-being.

This year’s theme is “Fall Prevention”. Americans aged 65 and above experience a fall each year, with 3 million treated for fall injuries in emergency departments. Falls account for 95% of hip injuries and can lead to loss of independence and reduced ability to perform daily activities. Falling once doubles the risk of falling again.

Even without injury, falls can cause a fear of falling, leading to decreased activity, weakness, and a higher risk of future falls. Engaging in enjoyable physical activities and working with a physical therapist can improve balance, muscle strength, and endurance, reducing the risk of falls and related injuries. According to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, physical therapy focused on these areas is highly effective in fall prevention.
