The Library of Congress hosted website, Jewish American Heritage Month, states that May was selected for Jewish American Heritage Month due to the 350th anniversary celebration marking the arrival of Jews in New Amsterdam.

However, certain core beliefs and practices, such as adherence to Jewish law (halakha), celebration of holidays like Passover and Yom Kippur, and a connection to the Hebrew language and the land of Israel, serve as unifying elements.
