July marks the annual observance of Disability Pride Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the disability community’s rich history, accomplishments, lived experiences, and ongoing challenges. This commemorative period serves to heighten public awareness, increase visibility, and combat prejudice against individuals with disabilities.
“I wish for a world that views disability, mental or physical, not as a hindrance but as unique attributes that can be seen as powerful assets if given the right opportunities.”
—Oliver Sacks
The roots of Disability Pride Month can be traced back to 1990 in the United States, coinciding with the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that July. While the concept has existed since then, the inaugural formal celebration of Disability Pride Month took place in July 2015, coinciding with the ADA’s 25th anniversary.
